Three Common Jawbone Treatments Performed by an Oral Surgeon

bonegraft dentistThere are several reasons that your jawbone might be in need of corrective surgery, ranging from gum disease, trauma as a result of an accident, or even a birth defect. Depending on the extent of the problem, your dentist may perform one of these three common jawbone treatments.

Bone Grafting

There are several reasons why you might need a bone graft. Bone grafts work to elevate the sinus floor while filing in deformities and craters in the jawbone. Grafting can also thicken the jawbone so that it can successfully place implant anchors.  Grafting material can be taken from the lower jaw, or it might also be taken from the pelvis. In some cases, it can also be synthetically created.

Ridge Modification

A ridge modification procedure will be used to treat jawbone deformities that have resulted from birth defects, gum disease, and trauma. Birth defects are especially problematic in leaving unattractive indents in the jaw, which can make it difficult to place dental implants. Throughout the surgical produce, the gum will be pulled away from the bone so that the defect or imperfection can be exposed and then filled with grafting materials. The wound is then sutured closed, and after it heals, the appearance of your jaw should be significantly improved and ready to accept dental implants.

Sinus Augmentation

A sinus augmentation is typically performed the placement of dental implants in order to make sure that the false teeth are firmly fixed to the bone. The success of a dental implant will be based on the quality and amount of jawbone. This surgical procedure is generally performed by making a mall incision into the bone before packing the space with grafting material. The incision is then closed, and after it has healed properly, the implants are put into place.
