Are you considering dental implants to improve your smile and boost your confidence?  Implants are much more common than they were even five years ago. More people than ever before are improving their dental health, beautifying their smiles, and embracing a newfound self-confidence. If you are considering dental implants or already have an appointment scheduled, there are a few tips that can help you heal from the procedure as well as possible.

Rest

This is one of the most important tips you can follow after your dental implants, although it is one of the most overlooked.  You need to remember that getting dental implants is a surgical procedure.  You need to listen to your body; when you are tired you need to rest.  Resting helps the body heal faster, so take it easy.  Avoid strenuous physical activity and take a few days to really pamper yourself.  You will heal faster and avoid disturbing the implant sites unintentionally.

No Smoking

Your oral surgeon will give you very specific aftercare instructions and you must follow them all very closely.  Refraining from smoking is very important as it actually slows the natural healing process.  When you smoke you are decreasing the supply of oxygen in the blood, and oxygen is needed to heal properly.  Additionally, smoking after implants may also increase your risk of infection. It’s also important to note that when you smoke after you receive implants it may damage the healing gum tissue and discolor the implants.

Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods

It is important after your oral surgery to eat a diet full of beneficial nutrients.  Focus on foods that will give you the nutrients you need to support a healthy immune system.  When you are recovering from surgery your body will benefit from a strong immune system.  Strong immune systems are supported by healthy diets. A balanced diet will help aid your body in the healing process so you can heal faster and start enjoying your new smile sooner.

Heed the Advice of Your Oral Surgeon

No two oral surgeries are exactly the same.  This is why you must follow the aftercare instructions that your surgeon provides to you very carefully.  If you have questions or concerns about the instructions, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification anytime.  Well-intentioned friends and family may offer solutions or ideas for post-operative care, but it is important to follow only those instructions given to you by your surgeon.
