A tooth with the facebook logo on it.Three million people in the United States have dental implants. Every patient has concerns about the amount of pain that can be expected both while having the procedure and afterwards.

The answers to the amount of pain to be expected vary due to the procedures that need to be performed and how many teeth are being implanted. If a bone graft to the jaw must be done first or there is other deterioration, preliminary procedures can affect the pain level to be expected. All patients are different in the level of pain experienced. Some feel almost no pain and some have an uncomfortable amount.

Overall, the actual implanting of the tooth is usually tolerable since the area is numbed by a variety of products and procedures. But, let’s face it. This is surgery to your mouth where there is drilling into the jawbone.

After the procedure you will experience mild to strong pain in the area of the implant. Usually an over-the-counter pain reliever is all that’s need; however, your dentist may prescribe something stronger for a few days.

Immediately applying ice to the affected area is highly recommended. Some dentists will send you home with one. If not, be prepared and have one with you. Or you can always apply a bag of peas to the area. Do not get too cold and freeze the area.

Pain can be expected for 1 to 3 days. Then it should taper off. There is a phenomenon that can occur with all surgery in that pain gets worse during the 4 to 5 day range then gets better.

Usually this pain is tolerable and manageable. However, if there is an inordinate amount of swelling and redness that may indicate infection, contact your dentist right away.

Other issues can arise with the implants, but usually they are rare. The most important thing to do is follow your dentist’s instructions. Be sure to contact us anytime you feel that something is wrong or you are unclear about after care.
